Yesung Lee is a jewellery artist working with yarn and metal. While her work appears rooted in traditional craft on the surface, the underlying structure is designed through 3D printing. Three-dimensional forms that would be difficult to achieve by hand are first modelled digitally, then wrapped in hand-dyed yarn through crochet to complete the surface. In this way, digital fabrication and handcraft coexist within a single object. The surface, built through accumulating loops, carries the time and rhythm of the maker. Where metal and fibre meet, a texture that first feels unfamiliar gradually absorbs the warmth of the body, slowly becoming the wearer's own. Lee believes that everyday materials and repetitive patterns create an experience in which texture can be felt through memory and association, even without touch. She holds a degree in Metal Work & Jewellery from Kookmin University, Seoul.

"People often say this work reminds them of something alive — a heart, a fish, an animal. The familiar texture of yarn and the rhythm of repeated loops invite these associations. That sense of familiarity allows the viewer to accept an unfamiliar form without resistance.

Yet the interior is a digital structure, designed through 3D printing. Forms that would be difficult to achieve by hand are first modelled digitally, then wrapped in hand-dyed yarn to complete the surface. What is visible on the outside and what lies within are made in entirely different ways.

The familiar wraps around the unfamiliar, and through that, people find something living in a digitally constructed object — projecting emotion onto it, much like they would with a companion animal. This work begins with a question about how familiarity shapes the way we perceive things."
