ARTWORK FOR PURCHASE AVAILABLE SOON
Willow Bloomfield creates organically forged metalwork, blending a playful, creative spirit with a deep observation and study of the natural world.
He uses traditional, endangered techniques such as hammer forming and repoussé, alongside experimental, research-driven processes.
He has developed a distinctive aesthetic language. His work balances artistic curiosity, material sensitivity and craftsmanship.
"My practice is rooted in transformation through material process. Working primarily with metal, I explore how intentional craft process combined with experimental conditions can give rise to organic, unpredictable forms. Drawing on early memories of childhood curiosity and experimentation. I remain interested in the tension found in yielding control, where the intention of human endeavor “often go awry”
Surface is central to my work; some pieces are meticulously and thoroughly worked where others are developed over time through chemical reactions, accretion, and corrosion. These processes echo natural systems, emergent growth and geological accretion where structure emerges from repetition and variation. The resulting forms are evocative of geological, botanical, or oceanic structure.
Furthermore I am interested in our spiritual and qualitative relationship to material and objects. Contemporary extractivist relationships towards Industrial metals, contrasts the living alchemical traditions of ancient people. Through my work metal is recontextualised through slow, labour-intensive processes that emphasise fragility, irregularity, and change. In this way, the work challenges rigid ideas of permanence and finality, instead presenting objects as evolving states within a wider narrative. A momentary ephemera on the transformative stage of the universe."
