Villu Mustkivi is an Estonian blacksmith and metal artisan whose practice represents a dialogue between heritage and contemporary craft. For over a decade, he has dedicated himself to the transformation of iron and the craftsmanship that accompanies it.
His career began with vocational studies where he mastered the fundamentals of the forge, learning to command hot iron and bend it to his will through the rhythmic precision of hand, hammer, and anvil. This journey into the ""how"" of blacksmithing provided the technical muscle memory and an intimate understanding of iron as a material.
Soon thereafter, he continued his education at the Estonian Academy of Arts. It was here that his relationship with metal underwent a fundamental shift. Iron ceased to be a material defined solely by its utility or strength; it became a medium for artistic inquiry.
By the synthesis of tradition and modern execution techniques, his work gives metal a new voice – one that is rooted in an ancient craft while speaking fluently to contemporary aesthetics.
"What does it mean to be a blacksmith in the 21st century? A craft that was once a necessity in everyday life has now been largely replaced by industry and mass production. In my practice, I try to bridge the gap between the long-standing traditions of the craft and the needs of a contemporary world. Rather than limiting myself to age-old methods, such as the hammer and anvil, I embrace new technologies and metalworking processes – viewing them as an extended vocabulary in the blacksmith’s repertoire.
Much of my inspiration comes from industry: the large-scale operations that occur behind factory doors. I take these industrial processes and scale them down to a level that is manageable for both myself and the viewer. By allowing myself to experiment, I discover new and exciting ways to manipulate iron, expanding my understanding of the material as one of endless possibilities."
