VAILA BLACK
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Illustration | Alternative Fair 2021
Vaila has recently returned to drawing & illustrating after an absence of around 15 years.
Feeling overwhelmed by the talent online and unable to see how to get there or reach that level – she just stopped.
Getting over the fear of not being good enough and deciding just to start again was such a positive step and has resulted in Vaila simply creating pieces for the joy & process of drawing itself.
Heavily influenced by the simple colour palettes tattoo artists traditionally used (Vaila is a huge fan of tattoo art/ graffiti), she started creating bold colourful illustrations.
Drawing daily and just drawing whatever she wants with no set agenda – just the desire to create and enjoy the process. Vaila’s philosophy on her art is simply to create work that makes the viewer smile.
Vaila draws bold bright fun pieces – her thought process and work are created simply to make the viewer smile! Her style is simple/ bright and instantly recognisable.
She is heavily influenced by the simple colour palettes & bold lines used in traditional tattoos.
Living just outside Glasgow she has always felt the need to been surrounded by colour probably because the default sky in Scotland tends to be grey!
Despite being influenced by traditional tattoos she just uses her ipad to draw, being able to change and move and evolve her pieces has given her a drawing freedom she felt restricted by when using more traditional methods.
Vaila has so many favourite artists (she is very greedy when it comes to art she collects art prints, tattoos and toys!)
Some of her favourite artists are Jean Michael Basquiat, Keith Haring, Audrey Kawasaki, Takashi Murakami, Maggi Hambling, Miss Van, Ramden to the street artists working across Scotland – Oh Panda, KMG, Priest Corp & spray prince to name a few!
