SAMIRA HUKE

Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Illustration | Alternative Fair 2021

The Artist | 2021

With a Moroccan father and a German mother, Samira’s work is greatly influenced by the two cultures. Morocco is known for it’s vibrant colours - especially the cobalt blue, bright red and emerald green that can be found in her colour palette, too.

She grew up around a lot of street art in a multicultural neighbourhood in Cologne which sparked her continuous interest in different cultures and art.

Girl with flowers | 2021

During an internship in a graphic design studio, she had the opportunity to illustrate for different commercial clients and projects, including illustrations for packaging and an exhibition.
She is influenced by the imaginative worlds of books and French and Belgian comics. Coming from a design background, she also has a passion for vintage posters, packaging and interior design. She likes to find beauty in daily life and the world around her.

Currently, she is preparing for her master’s degree, planning to combine illustration and interaction design in her graduation project. Having worked predominantly digitally so far, she also explores traditional art making lately.

“Women and nature are two things that can be found a lot in my illustrations. I also like to play with interesting and dynamic poses, combining fun and quirky characters with simple backgrounds. In my work, there’s always a storytelling aspect, almost like a film still or snapshot of a moment in life, open to the viewer's imagination.”

I’m inspired by nature, memories and everyday moments. I like to capture them by drawing and taking notes in my sketchbook and by taking a lot of pictures with my phone. What inspires me can be a little detail of a beautiful flower, an interesting landscape, a cool looking person or just the experiences I have with the people surrounding me or on my travels.

I then take the sketches and photographs and experiment with different compositions and combinations.  Once I’m happy, I transfer them to my iPad, where I apply colours and put together the final artwork. I like to use delicate and simple linework, texture and warm, vivid colours.’
