Samantha Sloane graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in June 2022 after completing the school’s Silversmithing and Jewellery Design course. As a result of working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Samantha became heavily inspired by the natural environment of the West Coast of Scotland, and began her design journey through experimenting with natural found objects and working within the landscape.

Her final collection “Terra Incognita” was shortlisted for the Glasgow School of Art Sustainability Prize and ArtsThread Global Design Competition in collaboration with Gucci, and is heavily influenced by materiality and preciousness, as well as a sense of place and nostalgia. Samantha aims to create objects with new meanings, or “wandering jewellery”, that stem from existing found materials, reflecting her past lived experiences with her present reality.

Having spent a lot of time as a child being physically present within the landscape, I have developed a great sense of touch and physical know-how when climbing and walking along the Scottish West Coast. In addition to years of foraging, I own an archive of found natural objects such as bone, shell, feathers and stones, and I am drawn to these objects for their associated meanings and amuletic properties.

As I forage and wander along the coast, the meditative process allows me to think, to reminisce or just to simply be a peace and be present in that setting. Through tactility, sight, smell and sound I document these experiences and manipulate them to create a new breed of wearable artwork, or new reality, that has evolved from a previous existence.
