Immobilized by Depression | 2022

Omar Castanon is based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
His parents emigrated from Zacatecas, Mexico to the United States a few years before he was born. Being a first generation American citizen has shaped his experience in this country as he utilizes the opportunities granted to him to be not only the second in his family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, but is the first in his family to go on to work on a master’s degree. He has received a Bachelors of Science in Political Science and is currently working on a Master’s of Science in International Affairs and Global Enterprise. He hopes to use these degrees to work in Latin American politics in order to help provide more opportunities for those living in the area and to help combat the growing income inequality plaguing many of these countries

Death in the Family II | 2022

Omar has been taking photos for over four years now and has so far self-taught everything he has learned. He began taking photos as a way to not only document his own life, but also as a way to document his son, Ramon’s life. As he improved his skills, he began to receive more and more inquiries from others to photograph them in similar ways. Omar has since shifted to photographing cinematic portraiture and creating fine art photos as a 2nd job while he focuses mainly on his main goal of working in international politics. He has been featured in magazines, showcased his work in art exhibits, and has recently started working with musicians to create promo photos and album artworks.

Late Night Obsessions | 2022

Trying to Make it to Tomorrow | 2022

Learning to Love the Changes | 2022

Omar Castanon is a portrait photographer that utilizes cinematic lighting and vibrant colours to immortalize his subjects in larger-than-life scenes. Because of this, his portraits draw from a range of inspirations from classical paintings to poetry to contemporary films. His photos show a range of the human experience as they highlight an exaggerated version of reality. He especially likes working with BIPOC as he feels the depth of their unique experiences are not adequately explored in mainstream American storytelling.
