NING CHANG
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery
”The Living Trace”
Ning Chang, jewellery artist and researcher, explores the intersection between emotional intimacy and social narratives through narrative jewellery. Her work often engages with feminist theory and attachment psychology, transforming deeply personal experiences into poetic visual forms.
Born and raised in Taiwan, Chang studied Contemporary Jewellery in the UK, where she began to merge craft with critical thinking. Her pieces often employ techniques such as cloisonné enamel, wax carving, and metalwork, combining delicacy with emotional tension.
Currently based in Birmingham, she has developed her series "Screw Femininity" and "Avoidant," and continues to create more work using jewellery as a medium to question the cultural expectations placed on women. For Chang, making jewellery is not only an act of craftsmanship but also a form of self-dialogue — a process of expressing what often remains unspoken.
Through her practice, Ning Chang explores how jewellery can embody emotional intimacy and narrate the unspoken. Her work draws from feminist theory, attachment psychology, and personal memory, transforming these abstract notions into tactile forms that rest close to the body.
Each piece becomes a vessel of emotion — delicate yet charged with tension — inviting the wearer to contemplate the hidden connections between vulnerability and strength. Chang approaches making as a process of reflection and translation, where inner dialogue takes material shape and invisible feelings are given form.
For her, jewellery is a language of quiet resistance and remembrance. It is where personal and collective histories intertwine, allowing intimate experiences to be seen, touched, and carried.
