MAYU FURUTANI
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Illustration | Alternative Fair 2021
Mayu Furutani is a Japanese artist focused on animation and illustration. She is currently studying 2D animation at the School of Visual Arts in
New York City.
Her field of work ranges from illustration, animation to picture book.
Using various forms of media, she explores different ways to tell stories with her art. Since a young age, art has always been a form of self expression, and a way to communicate her feelings.
In 2021, she had her first art show in Tokyo.
She finds her inspiration in city life and people. There is something so fascinating about being in a city, where it’s filled with strangers, each having their life story which you will never know about. People-watching and wandering about their stories is one of her favorite things to do.
She is drawn to the mixed feelings of living in a city. It accepts all, and cares about none. It’s exciting and exhausting at the same time. Being an anonymous figure in the crowd makes you feel both free and lonely.
Her aim is to convey the feeling of subtle contradiction through her work: real and yet surreal, familiar and yet foreign, eastern and yet western, sad and yet whimsical.
