CLUSTER CRAFTS : “ANNEAL” EXHIBITOR
2026
ARTWORK FOR PURCHASE AVAILABLE SOON
Kye-Yeon Son, fascinated by metal's resistance, has been working to understand its properties and manipulate it to achieve her artistic vision. Now settled in Nova Scotia, Canada, Son is heavily inspired by the trees surrounding her in the local landscape. Her works evoke nature’s delicate, elegant, and tenacious qualities. Through structure, volume, and texture, her pieces portray emotions of resilience, memory, loss, endurance, and harmony. Her love for the creation process follows the premise that nothing in nature is predetermined, and the environment dictates the shapes and forms taken.
Son has been a professor at the Craft division at NSCAD University (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) since 1995 and has won the Saidye Bronfman/Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, Canada (2011) and Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022) and was a Finalist on the Loewe Craft Prize, Loewe Foundation, Spain (2019). Son has given lectures and workshops nationally and internationally and has exhibited in several solo shows and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States, Britain, Germany, Japan, and Korea.
"Inspired by the movement of tall grasses in the breeze, I tried to interpret its’ beauty and emotive qualities such as resilience and endurance by manipulating very thin steel wire.
Line creates movement through direction, space, volume, and texture in my work. Manipulating the physical and visual characteristics of fine steel metal wire allows me to explore various delicate structures interplaying between positive and negative spaces while creating volume, textures, space, colour, light and shadow in this form. Silver and gold plating were employed for colouring to express the beauty of nature. I hope this piece speaks to the beauty of endurance and harmonious survival in their environment."
