KIRYOUNG RO

Cluster Contemporary Jewellery
”The Living Trace”

Ro Ki-ryoung's work shows a reflection on the beauty and lyricism of nature. Growing up in a place with four distinct seasons, the artist creates designs through colors and shapes that change over time while white snow falls, green leaves are dewy, hot sun shines, and brown trees grow. The artist is especially focusing on expressing the texture of nature.
During her school years, she was especially interested in fashion. Her mother would style her clothes until puberty, so her interest in fashion was natural and fashion magazines were like a textbook to her. Her daily routine was to design fashion in a sketchbook. Interested in fashion, she majored in industrial design, not fashion, and later studied metalworking and jewelry design for her master's degree.

Her first jewelry design, which became interested in Korean forms while learning metalworking before going to graduate school, was a brooch with the motif of hanok. Although she is interested in architecture and nature, her early works focused on nature. The artist wanted to talk about the regret that the changes in Korea's four seasons are becoming increasingly blurred due to temperature changes. It may be because of the hope that the cloudy seasonal change will remain a happy memory through the work.

Ro Ki-ryoung visualizes and expresses images and emotions of seasons with natural materials. Everything you see on the street becomes a motif. Among them, architecture and nature bring out the greatest expansion of the work. It plays a role of showing time and conveying emotions through architecture dominated by straight lines and nature dominated by curvature. It expresses not only the shape but also the flow of seasons with colors. Having lived with nature with four distinct seasons, she feels sorry for the clarity of the blurred seasons. So, she expresses that regret in her work.

Jewelry that embraces nature brings wonderful metal artworks to life. Jewelry expresses the passage of time and the happiness of the moment that is felt in them. She loves giving flowers and becomes a moment when she receives gifts of happiness through the smiles of gift recipients. Let's hope that the feeling will be passed on to those who encounter the artwork. The wearer hopes that the beauty of the natural season will remain a happy memory for a while.
