JESS SARSON
“FORMS OF REVERENCE”
2026
Based in her Oxfordshire garden studio, Jess works as a potter and pottery teacher, focusing her practice on wheel-thrown stoneware and porcelain. Until she established her studio in 2020, Jess worked in the creative industries as a landscape architect and as a chocolatier, developing both practical and digital design skills. Her background in landscape design, working closely with nature to create functional, sustainable and beautiful spaces, has had a strong influence on her pottery. The natural world remains a strong influence today. Further influences stem from being brought up in the home of an antiques dealer and from parents who encouraged crafting, instilling a love of making from an early age.
“In my work I focus on making predominantly functional wear, aiming to create pieces that enhance the daily routines through their ergonomic design, flowing lines, and subtle glazes, often reflecting the colours and patterns of nature. I often use a single colour to glaze, two overlapping glazes that seem to create a landscape at their transition, or apply energetic marks with oxides that subtly blur into a glaze, creating earthy or sky tones. Beyond the pieces doing their intended job, I want them to fit quietly and comfortably into the home, not shouting to be looked at, but maybe to be appreciated as they perform their function. I don’t want a vase to compete with a beautiful flower, but to provide a simple vessel that complements it. I want someone drinking their coffee to enjoy the warm sanded-stone feel to the base of a mug, contrasted with the satin smooth curve of its side. It is those simple details that matter and provide an understated beauty.”
