JEANNETTE HJORTLUND
“FORMS OF REVERENCE”
2026
Jeannette Hjortlund is a Danish artist working in stoneware. Her practice moves between function and sculpture, exploring how objects can carry emotional presence within everyday life.
Approaching clay as both material and language, she works through a slow, tactile process where the hand remains visible. Folds, silhouettes, and subtle distortions emerge in quiet relation to the body, creating forms that balance structure and softness.
Rooted in Denmark’s west coast, her work reflects a quiet resilience shaped by wind, light, and shifting tides. Rather than pursuing perfection, Hjortlund allows variation and vulnerability to remain.
Her evolving practice expands from craftsmanship toward a sculptural and conceptual exploration of form — where the object is not only used, but experienced.
"I began working with clay through function — through the intimacy of objects meant to be held. Over time, I became less interested in what an object does and more interested in what it carries.
In my Couture series, I explore constructed form — surfaces that appear structured, almost dressed, yet remain soft and vulnerable. The folds are not decorative gestures but traces of negotiation between control and surrender.
In a time that often feels heavy and accelerated, I am compelled to create objects that stand quietly. I think of them as stoic witnesses — holding tension without spectacle, offering presence without noise.
Making them is both resistance and necessity — a search for stillness. Through clay, I shape forms that remain luminous, even in weight."
