”The Living Trace”

Jaehoon Jang is a Korean metal craft artist who creates jewelry using the Jjoeum Ipsa technique. He spent part of his childhood in Tongyeong, a city renowned for its najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl inlay) tradition, where he developed a fascination with craftsmanship and the spirit of dedication found in Korean traditional art.

While majoring in metal craft, Jang often visited the National Museum of Korea, deepening his desire to connect with traditional craftsmanship. During preparations for his graduation exhibition, he encountered the work of an Intangible Cultural Heritage master and became captivated by the delicate beauty of Jjoeum Ipsa.

Initially self-taught through books and videos, he now studies under Seung Kyung-ran, a certified educator of Intangible Cultural Heritage, to refine his skills.
Through his jewelry, Jang reinterprets traditional precision with modern aesthetics, shedding new light on the timeless beauty of Korean craftsmanship.
Moving beyond the flat expressions

Jaehoon Jang is an artist who reinterprets traditional Korean techniques through contemporary jewelry. He seeks to share the beauty of Jjoeum Ipsa, a traditional inlay technique originally used to decorate metal vessels, by transforming it into a modern wearable form.

Moving beyond the flat expressions of conventional inlay jewelry, Jang explores richer possibilities by working with iron objects that emphasize three-dimensionality and curvature. To express intricate patterns, he has studied the Jjoeum Ipsa method on small metal forms, delicately embedding fine silver threads to depict traditional Korean motifs.

Each motif carries symbolic meanings of longevity, prosperity, and happiness—wishes that reflect the hearts of the Korean people. By applying these motifs onto curved metal surfaces, Jang conveys both the refined beauty of Jjoeum Ipsa and a heartfelt wish for good fortune to those who wear his pieces.
