GAYLE MATTHIAS
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Crafts 2022 | 10 Years Cluster Crafts “MATERIAL MEMORY” 2026
Clean-Up-Workers (Deluxe Series) by Gayle Matthias merges the ergonomic features of a vacuum cleaner, with anatomical resemblances.
The ordering or removal of ‘matter out of place’ is an important aspect of the employment of such cleaning devices. Skin, hair, debris are sucked into a receptacle in order to present a hygienic veneer. The vacuum cylinder or bag is representative of lungs filled with pollutants, silicosis being an occupational hazard of miners, ceramicists and glass makers.
Vacuum cleaner attachments, assembled from found objects and moulded car mechanical parts, are the inspiration for ridiculous finicky brushes and scrapers that suggest obsessive cleaning.

Gayle Matthias is a practising artist, educator and researcher. Having exhibited nationally and internationally, Matthias has artwork in several permanent collections. She is Course Leader on the BA(Hons) Crafts and Material Practices course at Arts University Plymouth.
Matthias’ work reflects her social and cultural heritage and how heavy industry has left its hallmarks within communities, not only upon the landscape and the environment, but also on the body and the deteriorating conditions that transpire as a consequence. She employs a variety of kiln-formed glass techniques combined with mixed-media to produce dramatically poignant sculptures that resemble remnants of these past industries that also challenge our perceptions of glass.
