DENNIS BLATCHLEY

“FORMS OF REVERENCE”
2026

Based in Cornwall, in 2021, partly as a response to COVID lockdowns, I set up Dennis Blatchley Ceramics, buying a small kiln and converting my garden shed into a small ceramic studio. Since then I have been designing and creating a wide range of slip cast terracotta tableware, from large storage jars to small condiment bowls, as well as lidded serving dishes, bowls, plates, beakers and vases, all in a wide range of colours with a distinct matt finish.

“I make all my master models in clay by hand, using a series of interchangeable templates to “sledge” my forms. This technique sets imposed parameters on my designs, making them purposefully minimal but bold, with little or no decoration or illustration, and creates a “family” of forms, with a pleasing “loose” or “soft” accuracy.

I have a BA (Hons) degree in Contemporary Crafts Ceramics from Middlesex University (1993) and have previously spent time as a pottery assistant, glass sculptor, technician, and visiting lecturer in both ceramics, glass and drawing.”
