Claire Quick embarked on a transformative journey, transitioning from a 32-year career in pharmaceutical sales and marketing to pursue her passion for jewelry design and making. Her path led her to enroll in a degree program in Jewellery and Silversmithing at UCA Farnham, culminating in her graduation with First Class Honours in 2023. Presently, she serves as Artist in Residence at UCA.

This shift has empowered Claire to explore her creative interests from a fresh perspective, drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns and textures found in the natural world. From the mesmerizing ripples on water surfaces to the rugged beauty of rock formations and the delicate intricacies of natural fauna like lichen and bark, she finds endless wells of inspiration.

Texture serves as the focal point of Claire's artistic expression, and she employs a diverse range of techniques to imbue her creations with depth and dimensionality. Her current exploration revolves around the lost wax casting process, allowing her to capture the organic essence of natural forms. Whether through sculpting wax to create unique shapes or incorporating surface textures, Claire crafts jewelry pieces characterised by their organic, rustic aesthetic and tactile allure.

My work is inspired by nature and the natural forms that we see all around us. I have a real sense of discovery, exploration, and experimentation, and the natural world is continually changing, so there is a large canvas to explore.

The themes in my work are based on my observations and how I can interpret them. I use photography to capture that moment in time; for example, the textural patterns in rock formations, the patterns created on the surface of the water from light to the structures we see in natural flora such as lichen and bark. These are explored further through drawing and collage to generate ideas, which are then explored further through extensive testing using a range of different materials including wax, silver, bronze, and porcelain.

To capture my interpretation, I use a variety of processes including lost wax casting, mould forming, etching, and reticulation to capture that organic, textual quality. My main area of interest is lost wax casting, where you can capture the organic textures and forms and then build sculptural forms in wax. Observing various natural environments has inspired me to explore texture and surface to create jewelry that has an organic, tactile quality.
