CHRISTINE JOHNSON
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery
”The Living Trace”
Christine Johnson is a contemporary jewellery artist. She loves repetition and pattern and the interplay of light line and shadow. She is interested in optical illusion and in creating visual effects within her work. She frequently uses the effect of interference patterns to capture and incorporate Moiré fringes.
Christine’s work is entirely made by hand and each piece is unique.
Many of her pieces are kinetic, allowing the wearer to control the effect and to change the appearance of the patterns each time the piece is worn.
Christine is keen to pass on her knowledge to others and to encourage a new generation of contemporary jewellers. She founded the Farnham Jewellery School in January 2023 and she enjoys teaching regular courses and specialist workshops in her own studio environment.
In 2016 Christine graduated with distinction as an MA in Jewellery from UCA Farnham. In July 2018 she won the Society of Designer Craftsmen Prize for excellence in the work of a Licentiate of the Society. In October 2018 she was shortlisted for Enjoia’t and exhibited at the Design Hub in Barcelona.
Her work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Christine Johnson’s work is mostly based on forms occurring naturally, such as feathers and spirals. The forms created in her jewellery are abstract versions of these, which display repetition, pattern, moire and the juxtaposition of light and shade.
The relationship between opaque and transparent, and the interplay of light, line and shadow are used to create optical effects within the pieces.
"Continuous" is the most recent of her designs. It grew out of her previous visual research which resulted in her “Feather Series” pieces. “Continuous” represents the continuous nature of life. Continuity of purpose; continuity in the face of loss; continuity despite global challenge; continuity of spirit in human endeavour, and the hope for the continuous nature of existence. The forms seen in this work found inspiration in nature, and also in ancient symbolic shapes, especially circles and spirals. The lines show the different directions we can take, and also the containment and organisation we impress upon our lives, which - actually - give us the freedom to pursue the elements in life that interest us and fire us up the most!
It is hoped that the wearer of these pieces is inspired by the messages the pieces quietly represent.
