CHOUS CERAMICS

“FORMS OF REVERENCE”
2026

Chous Ceramics is a contemporary ceramic art partnership established in 2024 by Despina Chroni and Giorgos Zitis in Sparta, Greece. Despite their recent formation, the studio has rapidly gained international acclaim, with works selected for the 1st International Ceramics Sculpture Triennale in Poland (2025) and Viaggio Attraverso la Ceramica in Italy (2025–2026).

Their practice is a unique synergy of Giorgos’s academic background—holding an M.A. in Digital Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts—and Despina’s professional skills, refined through a 15-year career in the banking sector. This fusion of visual culture and professional rigour informs their commitment to designing and creating sculptural vessels that explore balance and tension, bridging Spartan heritage with a bold, contemporary aesthetic.

Chous Ceramics is a contemporary ceramic studio based in Sparta, Greece, whose practice is defined by the ancient Spartan ethos: "lakonizein estin philosophin"—to speak concisely is to philosophise. This principle guides the aesthetic of creative and life partners Despina Chroni and Giorgos Zitis, resulting in powerful, hand-built vessels that explore the intricate interplay of balance and tension within a single form—a sculptural invitation to experience the rhythm of life itself through objects of lasting value.

Working primarily with the coiling technique and stoneware, they create organic forms finished with vibrant, striking colours that are essential to the storytelling of each individual piece. This profound connection between material and narrative is reflected in their name, Chous (χoũs), an Ancient Greek word meaning both "earth, soil, or dust" and "ritual vessel." Drawing direct inspiration from the rugged Spartan topography, their sculptural works bridge antiquity with the present moment, manifesting as bold, contemporary expressions of handmade beauty.
