”The Living Trace”

Catherine Buddle has a background in the biological sciences, scientific illustration and graphic design. In 1985 she established Buddle Design, an award-winning graphic design consultancy. Her art practice has been influenced by the meticulous attention to detail required by each of these disciplines. She employs this precision to create organic forms that appear spontaneous, and represent the human psyche as an abstracted, mutable vessel. While exploring interior issues, she strives to create objects of beauty that the viewer can relate to intuitively.

Themes of science and nature are central to Catherine’s work, in which narratives allude to notions of perfection and containment: beyond a sheltering exterior, there exists the delicacy of a secret, mutable interior. She is fascinated by cellular structure, repetition and the possibilities offered through metamorphosis. Catherine employs repetitive techniques to hand-stitch, embroider and crochet with a focus on minutiae.
