BAIBA DZENITE

Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Crafts 2020 & 2022 |10 Years Cluster Crafts “MATERIAL MEMORY” 2026

Baiba Dzenite is a Latvian glass artist and designer, and founder of BAIBAGLASS, whose practice explores the poetic relationship between nature, memory, and material. Working primarily with hot glass techniques, Dzenite creates sculptural and collectible objects that evoke atmospheric phenomena such as fog, dew, and shifting light. Combining traditional craftsmanship with self-developed techniques, her work is recognised for its tactile surfaces, layered transparency, and subtle interplay between clarity and obscurity — what she describes as a form of “painting in glass.”

A graduate of the Art Academy of Latvia with both BA and MA degrees in Glass Art, Dzenite has expanded her practice through work and research across the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, and Japan. Her pieces are created through mouth-blown, hot-poured, and hand-shaped processes, often incorporating the imprint of antique Latvian linen tools, connecting contemporary glass practice with cultural heritage and the passing of time. Alongside her partner Erlands, she continues to push the boundaries of collectible glass through large-scale sculptural works and architecturally driven installations.

Since first joining Cluster Crafts in 2020, and later returning for the 2022 edition celebrating the International Year of Glass, Dzenite has become a valued and longstanding part of the Cluster community. In recent years, BAIBAGLASS has gained growing international recognition, including solo presentations at Lake Como Design Festival 2024 and Venice Design Biennial 2025, alongside features in ICON, New Glass Review 45, Wallpaper, AD, and Elle Decor. In parallel, the studio is preparing a major solo presentation and large-scale installation at the National Art Museum of Latvia during Riga Art Week.

Reflecting on her ongoing relationship with Cluster, Dzenite shared: “I feel how special it is for the platform and community. The BAIBAGLASS brand is turning into a new decade too, so we are on the same page.” Her participation in the 10-year Cluster Crafts celebration marks not only a continuation of this relationship, but also a shared moment of growth, evolution, and dedication to contemporary craft.

Baiba Dzenite specialises in hot glass techniques and glass tinting that elicits a vision of 'painting in glass’.

Baiba draws her inspiration from Nature and its phenomena – fog and dew. The visual language of nature gives expression to Baiba's inner feelings and perceptions of the mysteries of Nature and the hidden beauty of body and mind, encapsulated in layers of clear glass.

The range of her work includes mouth-blown, hot-poured and hand-shaped glass pieces made in a unique way by the use of traditional and innovative materials; the imprint of an antique Latvian heckling comb, a linen-craft tool, has become a distinctive feature of Collection CALM. This archaic artefact, signifying the timeless relationship between Nature’s phenomena and ancient Latvian linen-craft tradition, impresses upon contemporary glass art its symbolic 'imprint of time'

I remember observing and admiring wonders of Nature since the time of my childhood.
The dew is reminiscent of water pearls to me, which allows me to adore them without touching otherwise they will disappear. The phenomenon of fog seemed especially mysterious – realising yourself as part of the moment when the breath of Earth surrounds you…
I guess these and other phenomena teach us respectfulness towards Nature and Universe.

On the other hand I’ve been fascinated by the smoothness and transparency of glass and I think that clear glass has one of the best tactile qualities which distinguishes it from other materials.
When I am creating my art I have feeling that the glass is alive and lives its majestic life through changing shine of light.

Glass will always be more than just a material to express myself, it is a ‘synthesis of creation’ between human and this versatile material.
