Alex Gamsu Jenkins is a UK-based illustrator and animator. Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2015, he has worked with clients including Adidas, The New York Times and Netflix.

Starting out in illustration, his work gradually developed into animation and directing, working across editorial, commercial and personal projects. His work is often characterised by dark humour, strange characters and an interest in the more awkward or absurd parts of everyday life.

“My work usually starts with drawing. I'm interested in using strange characters and situations to explore everyday experiences, often pushing things slightly too far until they become uncomfortable, ridiculous or funny.

I tend to be drawn to themes of anxiety, boredom, social awkwardness and the strange habits people develop to get through everyday life. Humour is an important part of the work, but I’m also interested in the point where something funny can become unsettling.

Although I work across illustration and animation, I try to keep the process fairly direct and instinctive. Most ideas begin in a sketchbook, where I can experiment with characters, shapes and situations before developing them further. I'm interested in work that feels playful and immediate, while still leaving room for something stranger underneath.”
