ALARA SIPAHIOĞLU
“FORMS OF REVERENCE”
2026
Alara is a Turkish interdisciplinary designer-engineer, based in London. Her practice revolves around rethinking our relationship with materials through the design and use of objects. With a background in design engineering and an MA Material Futures, Alara combines technical material knowledge with experimental problem-solving. Her work explores the untapped potential of waste, using unconventional methods to challenge norms and spark change. Most recently, she has been developing new ways to transform neglected and discarded materials into meaningful, functional outcomes that encourage a shift in how we perceive these materials and recycling.
“I am an interdisciplinary designer-engineer focused on creating value from waste materials and reshaping perceptions of recycling and sustainability. We tend to categorise materials in fixed ways, labelling them as waste or too complex to reuse. I believe this limits our ability to recognise their potential and reconsider our relationship with the resources around us.
Reading Victor Papanek during my studies shaped my practice with a sense of responsibility for everything I put into the world. It encouraged me to consider not only how objects are made, but how they are used, valued, and eventually discarded. This awareness continues to guide my work and drives my focus toward transformation as a design approach.
My process combines intuition with technical material knowledge. I begin by studying a material’s physical properties alongside its cultural context, allowing these characteristics to inform what it can become. I am particularly interested in creating unexpected outcomes that invite people to question their assumptions about the potential of materials and repositioning waste as a viable and valuable resource.”
